16 Months

24 Oct

I can’t fucking believe the shit I read sometimes.

a 56 year old man sexually assaults a 14 year old girl and only gets 16 months in jail, and only after it took 3 YEARS to go to court.

Is 16 months really all a woman’s life and sanity is worth? Is that truly all my daughters would be worth if someone tried to destroy them?

Sickening. Absolutely disgusting. What’s even more frightening to me is that the parents seem to have no comment on the jail term. I bet the bastard would have got more time for robbing a bank.

My grandfather got 18 months for three generations worth of assault. Not only that, but got parole early for good behavior. Three generations of girls molested was worth about 12 months or so. I lost all faith in the justice system that day.

    sickening indeed …
i guess it did some good with the judge that he pleaded guilty – if he continues behaving nice and cooperative he may even get out way before the end of those 16 months. 16 years would have been more appropriate, i think.

I can understand the parents being relieved that she doesn’t have to testify. If your courts are as bad as ours, she would have been treated like the guilty party, adding more trauma to her already painful experience.

16 months is just ridiculous. What a joke. And I love the additional “punishment” about not being able to be around young women. Because that is SO enforcable.

Perhaps I’m being naive, but what was a 14 year old girl doing hitchiking in the first place? I have to think that part of the reason the parents didn’t comment much is that they are perhaps nursing some guilt about how the poor girl ended up in that situation in the first place.

But I agree that his sentence is laughable. Unfortunately, this is the norm in this country – sexual assault sentences are generally a joke. Look at Karla Homolka.

I can’t watch the news anymore.

sigh. a sentence under two years means he serves it right here in PEI, too. yay.

not that i suppose federal pens do wonders for anyone, or reform anyone.

but it’s hard not to turn to righteous notions of punishment even if i don’t really believe in them. because i want the bastard to pay for hurting that kid, that little girl, for taking advantage like that. he had the balls to drop her at her home after…that was the part that really sickened me.

and Hannah, you’re right about the hitchhiking, but in rural PEI it’s not that unusual for kids to hitchhike short distances…a vestige of that old “everyone knows everyone” kind of mentality, and a product of there being few options for kids without access to cars or parents who want to drive them places. which has probably always led to the kind of abuse that this old bugger was perpetrating. i doubt she was the first. and i doubt he saw it as much of an offense, either.

    shudder.

I grew up somewhere small where “everyone knew everyone else” and must agree with Bon’s assessment. You don’t think twice about hitching when most of the people who pick you up know your father.

We forget that small town security also tends to include small town secrets. Who knows how many other girls have suffered.

Most sexual abusers can’t be rehabilitated, so send them to Dorcester and let them suffer. For some crimes, an eye for an eye seems most apt.
